That one Gaylord Focker is back. I found the first two flicks to be quite hilarious so I definitely am looking forward to this one.

I loves me some Michael Bluth and I’ll watch pretty much anything with him in it. Rachel Green has also had her fair share of comedy roles which I’ve enjoyed as well. All around, looks to be a great comedy.

Dinner for Schmucks

This looks pretty funny but at the same time looks a bit retarded. It does have 40 Year Old Virgin and the I Love You Man, which I can dig. Just not so sure about the movie. Could be a surprise hit though.

I always wondered why nobody did it before me. I mean, all those comic books movies and television shows, you’d think at least one eccentric loner would have stitched himself a costume.
Seriously, out of all the millions of people who love superheroes you’d think one would give it a try.
Is everyday life really so exciting? Are schools and offices really so thrilling that I’m the only one who ever fantasized about this?
C’mon. Be honest with yourself. We all planned to be a superhero at some point in our lives.

Kick-Ass is a comic series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr published under Marvel’s creator-owned Icon imprint.

Dave Lizewski is your average teenager. He’s not the class jock or even the class geek. He’s not the class clown or class genius or class anything. He just merely exists. Until one day, fed up with his boring uneventful life, he decides to do something about it. He creates a makeshift costume, arms himself with a pair of batons, and hits the streets in search of civilians in need of assistance. While he’s in it for the “leaping over rooftops” and “pithy put-downs of purse snatchers” he soon finds out the reality of it is, you get FUCKED UP when you mess with the bad guys.

I typically like to read the collected editions of comics, so Kick-Ass was initially under my radar when the first few issues were released. Even when I saw the poster for the movie I brushed it off, thinking it was gonna be some spoof flick like those Scary Movie spin-offs (Superhero Movie). I had no prior knowledge of the series so I didn’t know it was a comic book film adaptation. I decided to watch the trailer and consider it for a Trailer Tuesdays post a few months back. I was literally in awe after what I witnessed. I little 10 year old girl in full superhero costume killing some bad mofos with her pistols and blades in gruesome violent scenes. Fuckin’ AWESOME! More on the movie a little later.

As I mentioned before, I like waiting for collected editions, and boy was it an incredibly long and brutal wait. More so after I watched the movie and was dying to read the book. After 4 months of being in queue, my local public library finally got me a copy. I read it in one sitting, could not put the book down. In contrast to the film, the comic is a lot more violent but I loved every page of it. It’s funny, bloody, sad, and a whole mess of other things which combined make for a great read.

I’m a big fan of Millar though I’ve only read Civil War, Superman: Red Son, The Ultimates, and Wolverine: Old Man Logan. I very much enjoyed each of them. The man has a nack for telling some epic stories. That paired with Romita Jr’s beautifully crafted artwork, is a match made in heaven.

This is very much a movie for fanboys by fanboys. It’s the comic book movie that we’ve always wanted. Sure, the Spider-Mans, Iron Mans, and Dark Knights of the world are all fine and dandy, but not all comics are suitable for kids and teens, despite the stigma. It’s quite understandable that this movie didn’t make a splash at the box office. It’s not a well established comic franchise.

The point is, this isn’t your “traditional” superhero and it’s not meant to be. They don’t have super powers or anything fancy. These are regular people trying to make a difference in the real world. If Hit Girl has to do that by slicing off the heads of bad guys, then so be it.

The casting for this was spot on. Aaron Johnson was more than believable as the run of the mill teenager. The always beautiful Lyndsy Fonseca was so sweet and charming as Katie that you really could not hate her, unlike the comic version. Together they made a great on screen couple and you can’t help but cheer when they finally got together. Mark Strong was the perfect mobster. Christopher Mintz-Plasse was funny and being the son of a mobster, you kinda feel for the kid. Nicolas Cage…he’s in everything nowadays…but I actually liked him in this role. Even more so for the fact that he payed homage to Adam West. By far the best acting came from Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl. She literally stole the show and was absolutely wonderful in every scene. This girl really has some acting chops.

Rounding out the cast were Clark Duke and Evan Peters as Dave’s friends. Both very funny and I only wish there had been more scenes between them and Dave.

Overall, this is a great and fun action flick you should watch with a few buddies. It’s as faithful to the comics as it can be, without needing to be a direct translation of the material (Sin City, 300, Watchmen). Reading the comic, whether it’s before or after watching the film, is highly recommended.

Uh, not much to say about the game, really. It looks like a poorly made budget title which was rushed into production to coincide with the film’s release. This just makes me sad. While it may be fun playing it with a buddy or two for a few minutes, I don’t think I could get any sort of extended enjoyment out of this game. For shame.

As is the rule around these parts, I try to mask my very poor writing skills and lack of actual written content. Thus, I’ve included many images and videos for you to enjoy while you try to make sense of what I just wrote.

Scott Pilgrim is 23 years old, living in the big city with his gay roommate, just trying to get by in this crazy world. He’s in a band. He’s lazy. He likes video games. Scott Pilgrim likes the new girl in town, Ramona Flowers, but to win her heart, he has to defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends. Seven! Evil! Ex! Boyfriends! Lucas has muscles! Todd plays bass with his psychic powers! The Twins are twins! Matthew Patel is an Indian guy! AND MORE!

I have to admit that personally I was never interested in this series. I occasionally saw it here and there, but whenever I flipped through the pages I just wasn’t feeling it. It’s a black and white manga style comic. A genre of which I’ve never cared for. If it were in color, I might have been enticed to read through it.

When the movie trailer was released I decided to look into it. I found out it’s directed by Edgar Wright, whom also directed Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Two films that are just as hilarious as they are awesome. I defy anyone to watch this trailer and not be giddy about it like a teen girl crushing on one of those Twilight dudes.

Less about action, more about story, but just as awesome!

I love the look of it. I’m hoping it’ll be like a mix of Kick-Ass and Speed Racer. The stylized eye-candy of Speed Racer and the comedic yet bloody awesome violence of Kick-Ass. That would be a fantastic mix and I wish more comic book flix were made in this fashion. Granted certain comic books, Batman, probably shouldn’t be adapted that way. But where applicable, I would love to have more of this kind. Scott Pilgrim vs The World is set to release in August 2010.

I’ve read through the first 4 volumes of the series, and am going to read the fifth one later this week. The final volume comes out in July but it appears that the entire series was adapted for the film. It’s one of the very few comic books I’ve read that actually, genuinely made me lol. Not in the crazy screaming sense but it definitely made me let out some odd sounds that I can only imagine were giggles.

There are a lot of gaming references as well. Even going as far as recreating the opening scene of Ninja Gaiden in one of the Evil Ex battles. It’s a great series that I’d recommend to any comic or gaming fan. Each book in the series is digest size. Less than 200 pages each but they read rather quick. It’d be perfect for someone with ADD as there’s lots of quick action-y things and witty dialogue with Gilmore Girl-like speed.

As mentioned earlier, if this series were in color, I might have been more interested the first time I came by it. Volume 4 has the first few pages in color which I only see as a wicked hurtful tease by creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. Give me the full series in color, dammit!! It really does look beautiful in color. I get why he did it in black & white, though. It cuts down on the work that goes into each book and after all, it is just one dude making this thing. He probably also meant to make it like an homage to manga but I chose to believe it was the former reason.

One draw-back to it being black and white is that a lot of the female characters look similar. Especially the ones with short haircuts. If it were in color it would have been easier to distinguish between them and read along in the story without any confusion. Other than that, this series has great writing and art. At less than $10 each, it’s a steal!

Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game is an adaptation done in the style of classic old-school side-scrolling beat ‘em ups ala TMNT and Streets of Rage 2. With an amazing chiptune soundtrack by Anamanaguchi and just as incredible art direction by Paul Robertson. Robertson previously created a short-film done in the same side-scrolling beat ‘em up videogame style called Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle: Street Fight 2006. The game will support up to 4-player local co-op. Unfortunately you won’t be able to team up with some online buddies to enjoy this epic adventure. It’ll presumably have 7 stages, to coincide with the Evil Ex boss fights. It’s set to show up on the PlayStation Network just in time for the movie’s theatrical release in August. It is unknown at this time but rumor is that it’ll appear on Xbox Live as well at a later date.

After many months of inactivity, I think this is a fitting post to return with. Took me countless hours to create but I feel it was worth it. I even decided to upgrade some plugins and tinker them until I got everything working properly to give this particular post the look I was going for. I hope the very few people that actually see this, enjoy reading the post, watching the vids, and seeing the pics. At least, I hope it’s coherent enough to read.

Iron Man 2

Not much needs to be said other than HOLY SHIT THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO BE FUCKING AWESOME. Did you see the suitcase armor at the end? Just the fact that it seems like they were able to pull that off realistically (it really does look feasible the way the portable armor comes together) gives me tremendous faith in this sequel. And I already loved the first one so that just adds to my anticipation. I cannot wait to see what Favreau does with The Avengers.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

twitRev: Fantastic Mr. Fox is indeed fantastic, 5th time watching it and I'd watch it 5 times more, love every minute of this cussin' flick

Fantastic Mr. Fox is an animated stop-motion flick directed by Wes Anderson, one of my favorite directors. I instantly fell in love with this movie. I loved the art direction, the music, the story, etc. I literally loved every second of this movie. The story follows a bandit fox and his wife while on a chicken stealing job. They get caught, she tells him that she’s pregnant and makes him promise that they’ll change their lives. Fast forward 2 years later (12 fox-years) and they’re living a normal family life. But Mr. Fox has a mid-life crisis and plans one last “big heist.”

The visual appeal was incredible as I’m guessing it was a stop motion film, ala Morel Orel, Nightmare Before Christmas, and James and the Giant Peach, it was simply pleasing to watch and I enjoyed it incredibly.

With that being said, my gripe was with the dialogue as a whole. Not sure how to explain it, but it just sounded…weird. It didn’t really take from the movie, just kind of irked me.

Also, the close-ups of the faces, especially the confused possum, were cussin’ creepy, and that security rat was just downright scary. lol

twitRev: Ninja Assassin was thrilling, violent action, bloody good fun, like a live action Ninja Gaiden movie...I wanna be a fucking ninja!

Ninja Assasin was a great action flick. Directed by the Wachowski brothers and starring that Asian dude from Speed Racer. Some if it was a bit on the supernatural side, like the apparent super speed, the healing, and the disappearing, but I didn’t mind. Wasn’t very realistic on that aspect but it worked for the movie. It was also a bit “stylized,” but again, it worked. I loved what they did with the shurikens, they had the effect of bullets in something like The Matrix. It must be a rich ninja clan, though, because they used a hell of a lot of throwing stars. Another favorite weapon was the God of War style chain blade. This movie had everything I would have loved to see from a Ninja Gaiden live action movie.

To be honest, I can’t remember much of what happened in this movie and I only saw it a couple of weeks ago. It had something to do with the price fixing of corn. And some dude tried to take down the company he’s working for. And some other stuff. I expected it to be a lot funnier than it was. Not to say that it was a bad movie but it just wasn’t something memorable.

There’s this pregnant chick working at a restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Then some crazy demon lady attacks the diner. Then some dude in a cop car with a shit load of guns shows up and tells them the apocalypse is coming. Then we find out it isn’t demons that are bringing the apocalypse but angels that are pissed off at humans for being dicks. And it turns out that the chick from the beginning is going to have a baby Jesus Christ or something and he must live but the angels want to murder the poor innocent unborn baby. Fucking angels, man. Anyway, that pretty much sums up the story. Legion was a bit of a disappointment for me. The story, dialogue, and pretty everything else was boring. I went into the movie expecting nothing more but I thought it would at least be a fun action movie. Not so. While the action was pretty cool, there was very little of it.

Some psychologist lady investigates what appear to be alien abductions in some nowhere town in Alaska. The concept behind this movie is interesting and I like what they did with the “archive” footage. In some scenes they did a split screen view with the “real” footage and a re-enactment. But in the end it felt like they were trying too hard to make me believe that the movie was based on actual events. I would recommend Paranormal Activity over this one. It also claims to have actual footage of an event that occurred but it does a much better job at making you believe that what you were watching was actually real. Granted, one movie deals with aliens and the other with ghosts, but The Fourth Kind felt like a big budgeted version of Paranormal Activity while the latter felt like a really cool indie flick.

The only other movies I’ve seen were either a comedy, a teen TV movie, or the Disney cartoon, so this should be a treat.

Night Shyamalan, I’ve really enjoyed all of his movies since The Sixth Sense. Yes, that includes his last three; The Village, Lady in the Water, and The Happening, which are the ones that garner the most negativity. The visual effects look fantastic and I’m sure this will be a great fantasy film to watch in theaters.

Killers

Really I just put this movie on here because I wanted to say that it looks like a cheap teen comedy version of the movie below. It looks exactly like Knight and Day but not as cool. Ashton Kutcher just CANNOT pull off the role of a government killer dude like Tom Cruise can. And that is the one thing that will definitely make this movie be an epic fail, as the cool kids like to say nowadays.

A modern sci-fi thriller directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio…FUCK YEAH! I’ve loved all movies directed by Nolan since Memento, and I’ve loved DiCaprio’s work in all of his movies since Gangs of New York. This is probably one of my most anticipated movies of the year.

*fun fact: this movie releases on my 23rd birthday, w00t! Should be a wonderful birthday present.

twitRev: The House of the Devil is a refreshing horror flick, it's nothing like the constant bullshit that Hollywood calls "horror" nowadays

The House of the Devil is about some chick trying to make it on her own and looking for a job to pay for rent on her new home. Outside of her current college dorm she sees an ad for a babysitting gig. She takes the job, drives to the house in the middle of nowhere, then shit hits the fan. The story is simple but that’s not necessarily a bad thing for this type of movie. It’s set in the ’80s and is shot in the same manner as movies of that era. In a day and age that is plagued with horror movies of the “torture porn” genre or gory remakes of original slasher flicks, The House of the Devil comes off as a true homage to late ’70s and early ’80s horror classics. The last half hour of the film plays out like a slasher flick but it’s the hour before hand that has an intense slowly paced build up. People who enjoy the previously mentioned torture porn flicks or remakes will definitely not dig this. It isn’t for them and they really wouldn’t appreciate this type of horror flick.

twitRev: Daybreakers had an interesting concept, was fairly entertaining, but some vfx made it look like a low budget direct-to-video flick

Daybreakers is about vampires and shit. Though it’s take on vampire’s is a bit different than many others. In this movie the vampires are the dominant species and the human are the ones on the verge of extinction. A company is harvesting humans for their blood and they’re in short supply. The main character is a scientist dude hired to invent a synthetic blood. He later meets some humans that have come up with a “cure” so to speak and convince him to help them out. He’s sympathetic to humans anyway so he’s immediately on board. Some parts of the story were a bit confusing. Essentially people get converted into vampires, and then turn back into humans, but then if they get bitten by a vampire again they don’t turn into vampires anymore but the vampires that did the biting were turned into humans…yeah, I didn’t get it either.

twitRev: The Men Who Stare at Goats was pretty funny, the story was unique, great acting, and George Clooney kills a goat...with his MIND!

The Men Who Stare at Goats is about some dude that goes to Kuwait to “investigate” the Iraq war after losing his wife to his boss. In an attempt to make her jealous or see how much of a man he really is or something. Once there, he meets this Special Forces dude that was apparently part of an American Army unit trained to use psychic powers like invisibility, remote viewing, intuition, walking through walls, and best of all cloud bursting…the ability to disperse clouds in the air! It had it’s funny moment here and there. By no means is this a hilarious movie but it isn’t really supposed to be a comedy. I loved all of the actors and the roles that they portrayed. It was an entertaining movie to watch and I would recommend it to others.

twitRev: The Road was so-so, wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't good, kinda boring at times, and the kid was annoying. overall, meh.

The Road is about a man and his son trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. From what I remember they travel south to the coast where it’s warmer or something. On the way they seek shelter and food and such while trying to avoid cannibals and such. I really wanted to like this movie but it just didn’t do it for me. It’s not that it’s a bad film but I was just expecting it to be a lot better. There isn’t much else that I can remember or want to talk about the movie.

twitRev: Couple's Retreat is pretty funny, had it's hilarious moments, and Vince Vaughn + Jon Favreau + Jason Batemen = Awesome!

Couples Retreat is about four couples that go on a vacation to some resort and it doesn’t turn out to be what they expected. Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, and Jason Bateman are always hilarious. On the female side, Malin Akerman and Kristen Bell are always hot. Plus that one chick from Sex and the City, for her age, is still pretty hot as well. It’s your typical comedy but it was fairly entertaining. The type of movie to watch on a weekend when you have nothing else to do.

Green Zone

"Discovering covert and faulty intelligence causes a U.S. Army officer to go rogue as he hunts for Weapons of Mass Destruction in an unstable region."

From the director of the Bourne sequels and starring Matt Damon. Seems very similar to the aforementioned films but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Damon kicking ass, should be a decent action flick.

Hot Tub Time Machine

The premise seems kind of ridiculous, seriously, a hot tub that’s ALSO time machine! But even then that sounds just as awesome as it sounds ridiculous. As long as this doesn’t turn out to be like The Hangover, which I didn’t care for, then it’s fine by me. Plus, I’m generally a fan of John Cusack.

Clash of the Titans

I absolutely LOVE the original. I’ve seen it dozens of times and can never get tired of it. While I love the original’s use of stop motion, big fan of stop motion here, I’m eagerly anticipating seeing a big budgeted CG release of this epic adventure. Though I doubt it’ll live up to my expectations, it should be a treat to watch. Directed by Louis Leterrier, whom directed one of my favorite super hero movies, The Incredible Hulk.

Kick-Ass

Based on the comic book of the same name, which I’ve personally never heard of. From seeing the poster, I initially thought this was going to be some cheesy comedy similar to those horrible Scary Movie type spin-offs. I couldn’t be more wrong after I watched the “Hit-Girl” teaser trailer. This movie really does look kick-ass… …
Seeing a little girl beat some dudes to death was awesome! I really was in awe.

‘Kick-Ass’ director Matthew Vaughn, produced Snatch which was directed by Guy Ritchie. Whom directed RocknRolla, which starred Mark Strong, whom also stars in Kick-Ass!

Minutemen: The Silhouette, Mothman, Dollar Bill, Nite Owl, Captain Metropolis, Silk Spectre, Hooded Justice, the Comedian (kneeling) [founded in 1939]Crimebusters: the Comedian, Silk Spectre II, Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias, Nite Owl II, Rorschach [founded in 1966]

Essentially it’s a story about superheroes in a world where superheroes are unwanted and hated. Technically, though, they aren’t superheroes. They are masked adventurers. The only character with actual super powers is Dr. Manhattan.

The plot revolves around a Crimebuster who is murdered. This eventually unravels a conspiracy theory of a “mask killer” which could be connected with events of the Cold War. A fellow Crimbuster investigates the murder and the rest of the movie basically plays out like a detective story. All of which takes place in an alternate timeline.

Anyway, the director’s cut of Watchmen includes about 30 minutes of extra content not found on the theatrical release. After having watched both versions of the movie, I have to say that the D.C. is a lot closer to the original graphic novel. Not by much though. On the D.C. there are a few scenes throughout the movie which are slightly extended. I only really noticed a couple of additional scenes.

The one additional scene that is quite noticeable is when Hollis Mason, the first Nite Owl, gets murdered by the Knot Top gang. This occurred in the graphic novel but not in the theatrical release.
Some members of the Knot Top gang hear that a masked adventurer dressed like an owl broke Rorshach out of prison. They are infuriated by this and mistakingly believe that Hollis Mason is the same Nite Owl that broke him out.
Since it’s assumed Mason would have eventually died during the events that took place later on, it was easy to cut the scene out of the film. As Snyder puts it, it was easy to cut out “without destroying the movie.”

Considering all of the source material, it’s pretty amazing how closely they adapted it to a 3-hour film. Even the Watchmen: Motion Comic, which I’ll get to a little later, is about 5 hours long. Alan Moore’s Watchmen is an incredible piece of work and truly is one of the best comic books of all time. The movie has been in development hell since the early ’90s with many people deeming the novel as “unfilmable.”

Alan Moore:

“My book is a comic book. Not a movie, not a novel. A comic book. It’s been made in a certain way, and designed to be read a certain way: in an armchair, nice and cozy next to a fire, with a steaming cup of coffee.”

In 2003, David Hayter (the voice of Solid Snake, bitches!) completed a script for a Watchmen movie, which he called “a great adaptation [...] that absolutely celebrates the book“. Despite Moore’s disagreement with the project, he gave his blessing to Hayter’s script which was ultimately used for Snyder’s film adaptation.

Two substantial events that were removed from entirely from the film are the ending and the story within a story, Tales of the Black Freighter.

Tales of the Black Freighter does make an appearance in the D.C. of the movie but only for a scene. TotBF is a pirate comic book which is read by some dude at a news stand. Throughout the graphic novel are snippets of this story intertwined into the Watchmen story.

It shows up in the scene right before the murder of Hollis Mason.Despite it not being in the movie, they made a separate short animated film for it.It’s only about half an hour but it’s pretty much the same as the story in the book.

I’m drawing a blank on what else to say about Watchmen. The movie is great and I highly recommend it to fans and regular folk alike. A friend of mine, our very own Niko945, had never read the comic book but really enjoyed the movie. A lot of “critics” and über Watchmen fans have given the movie bad reviews. Watch the movie for yourselves and make your own opinions. And like I said at the start of the post, don’t go into this movie expecting an action packed superhero flick.

Watchmen is set to release on July 21st, 2009. That’s less than two weeks away. Head on over to Amazon and place a pre-order or pick it up at your local retailer of choice on the 21st. I’d recommend staying away from the Theatrical Cut and only getting the “Director’s Cut” edition on DVD or Blu-Ray. Or you can wait for the rumored “Ultimate Edition” which will come with the TotBF animated short edited into the movie so it plays out like it did in the comic book version of Watchmen.

You can also pick up the graphic novel for less than $15. At the time of writing, it has 666 5-star reviews out of 874 total reviews. 666…that’s a lucky number, right?

If you’re not one for reading but would still like to experience the original story, buy the Watchmen: Motion Comic on DVD or Blu-Ray. It’s pretty interesting how they made Dave Gibbons’ original drawings come to life. This is quite different than an actual animated film, so check out the trailer below. Also, there is only a single voice actor who narrates for both men and women. It’s a bit odd at first but the narrator does a decent job of it and you’ll get accustomed to it.

And lastly, you can pick up Tales of the Black Freighter on DVD or Blu-Ray. $20 is pretty expensive for a 26-minute short but it does come with a half hour mockumentary for Under the Hood. UtH is the autobiography of Hollis Mason, where he explains the events of how he became Nite Owl, and discusses the formation of the Minutemen. It was also printed at the end of chapters in the graphic novel.

P.S. …is it just me or was there not enough blue penis in the movie version of Watchmen…anyone?
